Both tooth files have a diamond-coated abrasive surface, which allows considerably more uniform trimming of molars than is possible with conventional tooth rasps. The short handle and small abrasive surface significantly reduce the risk of injuring the blood vessels located in the angle of the mandible.

The coarse file is used to quickly trim any angular tooth protuberances that are difficult to reach with the trimmer. The fine file is used for smoothing off after trimming the tooth tips, and for removing small protuberances.

Both files are also well suited to trimming deformed bird and tortoise beaks.
